Points Scoring System

The Australian Football League (AFL) has a unique points-scoring system that differentiates it from many other sports.

AFL has two types of scores - a goal and a behind. A goal worth six points is scored when the ball is kicked through the two larger, central goalposts at each end of the field. On the other hand, a behind is worth just one point and is scored when the ball passes between one of the goal posts and one of the shorter, outer behind posts, when the ball hits a goal post, or when the ball is touched before passing between the goal posts.

Interestingly, AFL matches do not end in a draw. In the rare instance that a match is tied at the end of the fourth quarter, additional time is played until a winner is determined.

These scoring guidelines contribute to AFL's high-speed, high-scoring nature, making it an entertaining sport for spectators and a thrilling option for bettors.

Understanding AFL - Basics for Newbies

The Australian Football League or AFL is a professional annual Australian Rules Football competition that started in 1896 as the Victorian Football League (VFL). This resulted from its breakaway from the Victorian Football Association or VFA. The league's inauguration occurred in 1897, and in 1990, its name was changed to AFL.

Today, the league comprises 18 teams across Australia's five mainland states. Some of the participating teams include Sydney Swans, Greater Western Sydney or the GWS Giants, and West Coast Eagles.  The AFL currently creates its Australian Football laws, whose variations are used by other Australian Football organizations.

The Structure of AFL

Australian Football League is the only fully professional Australian Football championship governed by the AFL Commission. The sports functions on a single table system with no divisions. It also lacks any conferences or relegations from other football leagues. This makes it a top-tier competition played by professional teams and experienced players. Sometimes it is regarded as football, Aussie Rules, or Footy.

AFL Teams and Their Might

The AFL is played by 18 teams from the five mainland states of Australia. These teams include Collingwood, the defending champions, Brisbane Lions, North Melbourne or Kangaroos, and Western Bulldogs.

For instance, Collingwood, Essendon, and Carlton are the most accomplished teams with 16 titles. Other teams with great results include Richmond, Hawks, and Demons.

Format of the Australian Footy League

The Australian Footy League has quite a distinct format. The competition comprises the 23-match home-and-away season of 11 home games, 11 away games and 1 neutral game. During the AFL premiership, teams receive four points for a win and two for a loss.

The clubs are then ranked on the ladder based on the number of accumulated points. In case of any ties, head-to-head matches are arranged.

AFL Finals Series

After the AFL premiership, the top 8 teams proceed to the AFL finals series. During this four-week tournament, the first four teams play qualifying final games while the last four play elimination finals. The first four clubs only need to win two finals to proceed to the grand final, while the last four teams must win three finals.

After qualification and elimination finals, the semi-finals and preliminary finals are played to determine the teams competing in the grand final.

Grand Final

Only two teams proceed to the grand final, a match that will determine the league's Champions. The winner of this meeting receives the premiership cup and the flag, while players are awarded gold medals. In case of a draw, teams play two extra times to determine the premier.

Venues

AFL matches occur across various spectacular venues throughout Australia, each boasting its unique atmosphere and charm. Most teams in the AFL have the advantage of playing home games at more than one stadium, with some teams calling home to as many as three different stadiums. This offers variety in the locales but adds a layer of strategy and familiarity for teams and their ardent followers. Each arena has its own story, from the illustrious Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to the iconic Optus Stadium in Perth. Following this paragraph, you'll find a detailed table showcasing the vast array of venues used in the AFL, indicating each stadium's name, seating capacity, location, and the teams that call it home. This comprehensive index will offer readers unique insights into the environments where their favourite teams battle during the AFL season.
