The American League West is quickly turning into one of the more competitive divisions in baseball, and the AL West odds reflect that narrow chase. The Houston Astros have dropped from fifth to 21 in our MLB Power Rankings, and now own Word Series odds of +1400. For that reason, the AL West odds are worth following in 2024.

Take a look at the most competitive MLB odds at the best sportsbooks prior to making any futures wagers.

AL West teams

Texas Rangers (+135)

The Rangers’ hype is real as the club comes off its first World Series, and the public has pushed Texas to the top of the AL West odds board. Texas is loaded with talented hitters, from perennial MVP candidate Corey Seager to middle-of-the-order slugger Adolis Garcia.

Right now, Texas is treading water as it awaits the return of star pitchers Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom. With the Astros in trouble, the Rangers are deserving of chalk status in the AL West. If the clubs hang tight into September, when the star pitchers might return, we will have a real good race.

Seattle Mariners (+165)

Backed by an illustrious history of superstars like Ichiro Suzuki and Ken Griffey Jr., the Mariners haven’t realized much success. Seattle has ripped off three straight seasons of 88 or more wins but has just one playoff series victory to show for it.

The M’s elite pitching staff is doing the heavy lifting at the moment as Seattle holds a narrow grip on the AL West lead. I like the Mariners’ makeup, but I have concerns about the club’s ability to hit for a full season. In the end, I’d like to see Seattle hold the division lead through May before laying any futures wagers.

Houston Astros (+240)

If you’ve watched an MLB playoff game in the last decade, chances are you’ve seen the Astros in their element. Houston’s been a force over the last few years, winning the AL West in six of the last seven seasons. Beyond that, the ‘Stros have succeeded, winning the World Series in 2017 and 2022.

The ‘Stros have Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Yordan Alvarez (who holds some value in his MLB MVP odds) back for another year, but the first six weeks of the season have seen the club sink lower and lower. Houston went 7-19 through its first 26 games, the team’s worst start to a year since 1969.

Houston has lost its chalk status, tumbling down to third in the AL West odds. While I still don’t hate a value bet on the Astros, time is dwindling.

Los Angeles Angels (+6500)

With Shohei Ohtani out the door after seven consecutive sub-500 seasons, the prospects in Los Angeles are grim. Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon remain, but the franchise is on a one-way train toward a rebuild. The Angels haven’t won a playoff game since 2009, and they won’t be anywhere close to an October victory in 2024 either.

After a hot start in 2024, the Halos have returned to their usual losing ways. Trout suffered a torn meniscus, and Rendon is on the shelf again. Don’t even consider a bet on the Angels to win the AL West title.

Oakland Athletics (+11000)

Currently the most downtrodden franchise in MLB, the Athletics don’t have a chance at the AL West in 2024. There were some blips of success in Oakland, including playoff appearances from 2018 to 2020. But with back-to-back 100-loss seasons, all futures bets should steer clear of the A’s, especially with their long odds to win the AL West.

AL West best bet: Everything’s bigger in Texas

Even with significant injuries to the starting rotation, Texas can win 90-plus games and squeak past Houston for the AL West crown. Last year, the Rangers finished second in batting average, third in on-base percentage, and third in slugging.

Thankfully, the Rangers’ pitching depth, with Nathan Eovaldi and Jon Gray, provides just enough to keep the team afloat. From there, Texas can slug its way to the top of the division. Despite the Rangers’ second-place status, Texas is favored in the AL West odds. Right now, I’m comfortable laying them as the chalk for a best bet.

MLB futures bets work the same as any futures bet. These bets are decided by long-term results and are usually settled at the end of the season.

What are the key factors to consider when betting on the American League West?

There are several factors to consider with AL West futures betting, starting with the “value” each bet offers. If, in your opinion, a bet on a team offers solid odds, or that same team isn’t playing up to its potential, you could place a wager.

Keep in mind, though, that strong teams often recover after struggling, so it’s wise to scope out a decent sample size and check in on historical trends.
