Best MLB NRFI Picks today: June 19

Seattle Mariners vs Cleveland Guardians

NRFI bets today: -129 at BetRivers

NRFI bettors have been cashing all season on the Seattle Mariners, whose 48-27 NRFI record remains the fifth best in all of MLB. Over the last nine games, Mariners starters have allowed just two first-inning runs — both of which came in Friday’s 3-2 victory over Texas.

Bryan Woo didn’t take the mound in any of those nine contests, as he hasn’t thrown a pitch since a 3-0 victory over the A’s on June 6. However, the right-hander returns to the bump Wednesday in Cleveland, and he’ll do so with a perfect 6-0 NRFI record.

The Guardians will counter with Tanner Bibee, who has yielded a first-inning run in each of his last two outings (vs. Kansas City, at Cincinnati). Prior to that, though, the right-hander had tossed nine straight scoreless first innings — part of his 11-1 NRFI mark to start the season.

Also, even though Bibee has given up first-inning runs in consecutive games multiple times in his two-year career, he’s never done so in three straight contests over 39 starts.

One final reason to love this NRFI play: Woo is facing Cleveland for the first time Wednesday, and the same goes for Bibee against Seattle. That should give both pitchers the upper hand out of the gate.

Houston Astros vs Chicago White Sox

NRFI bets today: -128 at FanDuel

Hunter Brown isn’t the most disappointing starting pitcher in 2024. But the Astros’ right-hander is in the conversation, as he’s 3-5 with a 5.00 ERA (after a disappointing 2023 when he went 11-13 with a 5.09 ERA).

The good news for Houston: Brown has strung together five straight quality starts, and he comes into Wednesday’s outing against the light-hitting White Sox having not allowed a run in 13 consecutive innings. He’s also tossed a scoreless first inning in six of his last eight starts.

This time around, Brown will be facing MLB’s most anemic offense, one that is averaging 0.33 first-inning runs per game (tied for fourth fewest in MLB). Throw in the fact that Chicago (51-23) has overtaken the Nationals as the most-profitable NRFI team, and we’re confident that Brown will get through the first inning unscathed Wednesday night.

We’re just as confident that the Astros won’t touch home plate in the first inning, either. The reason? They’re facing White Sox lefty Garrett Crochet, who leads the American League in strikeouts and has put up first-inning goose eggs in 14 of his 15 starts.

New York Mets vs Texas Rangers

NRFI bets today: -105 at BetRivers

You wouldn’t guess it based on his 4.11 ERA and 1.33 WHIP, but the Mets’ Sean Manaea has been a NRFI machine this season. The veteran southpaw has yielded just one first-inning run across 13 starts — and that was way back on April 13. That means Manaea will carry a 10-game NRFI streak into Wednesday’s outing at Texas.

Are we concerned that Manaea’s first-inning magic will run out against a Rangers offense that ranks fifth in MLB in first-inning runs scored? Not really, because Texas ranks in the bottom third of the league in OPS against left-handed pitchers. Also, the Rangers come into Wednesday having not plated a first-inning run in four straight contests.

More concerning is the fact that the Mets will be facing Texas lefty Andrew Heaney. Unlike the Rangers, New York hits southpaws quite well (.754 OPS, eighth-best in baseball). And Heaney got tagged for first-inning runs in his last two starts against the Mariners and Giants.

Previously, though, Heaney had strung together seven straight scoreless first innings. Also, he hasn’t had an 0-3 NRFI streak all season.
