The Dodgers entered the 2024 season as the team to beat in NL West odds. To an already stacked squad, they added Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, and Shohei Ohtani, looking basically unbeatable.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, it’s those same Dodgers that are dominating the division to start 2024. The Dodgers are obvious favorites in NL West odds, sitting at -1100. The next closest teams are the Diamondbacks and Giants way down at +1800 and +2100, respectively. If that’s not enough, the Dodgers sit at the top of World Series odds board, owning +320 odds to win the Commissioner’s Trophy.

NL West teams

Los Angeles Dodgers (-1100)

It’s pretty inconceivable that anybody will beat the Dodgers in the NL West this year. To an already dominant team they added Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, and more during the winter, and have come out firing in 2024. Ohtani has cracked the top five in home run leader odds to lead MLB in dingers, too.

The Dodgers haven’t even played that well this year, and they’re already running away with the division. If things really start to click in Los Angeles, I could see them winning this division by 25 games.

Arizona Diamondbacks (+1800)

The Diamondbacks were my winners of the offseason (aside from the Dodgers), but things have been rough in the desert to start 2024. Arizona’s losing record is in large part thanks to a struggling bullpen and a boatload of injuries.

Eduardo Rodriguez, Merrill Kelly, Paul Sewald, Alek Thomas, and Geraldo Perdomo are all currently on the IL for the Diamondbacks. It’s hard to see Arizona competing with that much of the roster on the shelf. If they don’t get some guys back soon, the DBacks may dig themselves too big of a hole to recover from.

San Francisco Giants (+2100)

I liked what they did this offseason, snagging Korean outfielder Jung Hoo Lee and signing Blake Snell and Matt Chapman to value deals at the end of the winter. But so far this season, the new guys haven’t brought much life to the Bay Area. The Giants are hovering around .500 and rank out average in most offensive and defensive numbers. But that’s not good enough.

There is a bit of hope for the Giants’ long-term chances, though. They should get Snell, Robbie Ray, and Alex Cobb off the injured list and into the rotation at some point this year. Maybe that injection of pitching will carry them to a winning record.

San Diego Padres (+2200)

Every year I talk myself into the Padres being different. Maybe this is the year the talent on the field finally translates into wins?

Alas, it looks like 2024 may be the same old story in San Diego. They’re off to a losing start to 2024, hovering just below .500 like the rest of this non-Dodgers NL West bunch. They’ve actually had good stories from guys like Jurickson Profar and Jake Cronenworth to start the year. But, the Padres still can’t seem to rattle off wins. The only thing worth playing here is Mike Shildt, whose +1000 Manager of the Year odds are sparkling.

Colorado Rockies (+50000)

I don’t even know what to say about the Rockies at this point. The four other teams in the NL West have at least a little hope, but there’s not much of that in Colorado. The Rockies are not going to compete for the NL West this year. Their race will be for the worst record in baseball, instead.

NL West best bet: Take the chalk

If you really want to bet on anybody not named the Dodgers, I’d sprinkle a bit on the Giants. Maybe Robbie Ray and Blake Snell come back from injuries and turn their rotation into one of the best in baseball? They’re also the only team to topple the Dodgers in recent years.

But, if we want to be smart here, the play is to just bet the Dodgers. Sure, the NL West odds are horrendous, but they’re going to win the NL West this year. It’s going to happen.
