  • Could a goaltender win one of the biggest prizes in hockey?
  • Three players out front in the race for the Conn Smythe Trophy
  • Can Bobrovsky’s excellent form carry Florida to Stanley Cup glory?

We are back for another discussion of the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals. The Florida Panthers took game one of the series over the Edmonton Oilers and will now be looking to secure a chokehold in the series with a game two victory on Monday Night. Aside from hoisting the Stanley Cup itself, one other coveted trophy will be awarded at the end of the Stanley Cup Finals: the Conn Smythe Trophy.

The Conn Smythe Award is awarded to the most valuable player of the entire Stanley Cup Playoffs, and 99% of the time, that award is given to a player from the winning squad. With game one under our belt, the Conn Smythe odds have shifted, so let’s dive into the current odds to win the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Sergei Bobrovsky (+200 on DraftKings) was one of the five players we discussed who was capable of winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in my last article on the Stanley Cup Finals. After game one, he is the favorite and the man we’d back to win it.

As usual, the offensive juggernaut, the Edmonton Oilers, outshot their opponent in game one of the finals. The issue? They were shutout 3-0 despite being outshot 33-18 with three power plays. The Cats’s defensive efforts and style of play are a factor here, but the main reason is the play by Florida’s man between the pipes, Sergei Bobrovsky.

The 35-year-old veteran netminder from Novokuznetsk, Russia, is making his second consecutive appearance in the finals and has been spectacular each year. Since this award considers the entirety of the playoffs, it makes sense that he is favored at the odds of winning the Conn Smythe. Thus far, he has out-dueled Andrei Vasilevsky, Jeremey Swayman, and Igor Shesterkin, three of the game’s top five or six net minders. That alone is impressive, but with a victory in this series, he will have also shut down three offensive juggernauts in Tampa Bay, New York, and Edmonton.

The only Panther I think is on his heels would be the Cats captain Aleksander Barkov. Barky recorded two points in the first game of the series off of two assists, although one was an empty net goal. Barkov is currently listed at +310, but if Sergei keeps playing this way, it will be hard to take it from him. Matthew Tkachuk will need to pop off if he wants to claim the trophy, and if you think he is capable, his current odds of +650 would be something to fire on.
