New York Rangers: Standing tall

The NY Rangers have been the league’s most consistently excellent team (our power rankings have had them at top five times and never outside the top six), but the steady ascension of the Panthers could give push them for top spot in the Eastern Conference.

As mentioned in the intro: the Rangers are still way out at +1100 to win the Stanley Cup. Why? Because the Eastern Conference is STACKED this year, with three of the top four teams in our NHL Power Rankings playing in the East. It’s going to be hard for the Rangers to make it to the Stanley Cup, let alone win it.

The Florida Panthers started the season in the middle of our power rankings, but have really rounded in form since Christmas when they took a spot in our top five and have never left. Last time marked the first time they’ve claimed the top spot, but could be a threat in the Eastern Conference to the end of the season.

Another team on the rise and worth a second glance is the Carolina Hurricanes. Sitting as low as 18th early in the power rankings, they are this week’s fastest risers, moving from ninth to fifth. Their second position in the Metropolitan Division is well deserved and while they may struggle to push the NY Rangers for the division title: They’re definitely worth consideration for the Conference title as the form book goes out of the window when the NHL playoffs start – something the sportsbooks have noticed as their odds for the Eastern Conference title are now second favorite behind the Florida Panthers.

Capitals knocking the door of Wildcard spot

The Washington Capitals have gone 7-3 in their last ten games and are the fastest climbers in this week’s power rankings – moving from 27th to 22nd. They sit fourth in the Metropolitan Division right now, but FanDuel has them priced at -135 to make the playoffs – that price is going to get shorter so jump on it right now if you think the hot streak will continue.

How do the NHL power rankings work?

The Oddspedia Insights NHL power rankings are defined using nearly 20 data points for each team. These vary from win/loss records, goals scored and strength of schedule, down to penalty kill percentage. These data points are then weighted by significance and subjected to a formula that generates each team’s Insights score.

We chose to show each team with their Stanley Cup odds as there may be some teams that are currently undervalued by sportsbooks and could prove worth further research.

What does the Insights score mean?

The NHL power rankings Insights score is a unique method of measuring the performance of each hockey team in the league – the exact formula for calculating a team’s Insights score is complicated with a number of statistics like overall win/loss record or strength of schedule given greater importance than average squad age (with younger being better) or opponents’ Penalty In Minutes per Game (oPIM/G).

To make it easier to understand: a lower score is better, with the lowest possible score being 11 and the highest possible being 368.

We did warn you – it’s complicated.

Oddspedia has carried out extensive research to put together a list of the best sportsbook promos currently available in the US. You can take advantage of these incredible offers now to get even more out of your hockey betting.
