After being quickly pushed to the brink of elimination, the Edmonton Oilers have fought their way back to force a Game 6 at home against the Florida Panthers on Friday night. With Florida being just a win shy of their first Stanley Cup in franchise history and Edmonton pushing for a winner-take-all Game 7, this next matchup could prove to be the most entertaining of the season. With Game 6 tonight, we dive into our NHL picks from the best NHL betting sites.

Currently, the Panthers are the favorites in the Stanley Cup odds, as they’re priced at -330 at DraftKings sportsbook, while the Oilers are priced at +275.

The Oilers once again solved Sergei Bobrovsky in Game 5, beating him four times and adding an empty net goal. Connor McDavid recorded his second consecutive four-point game and has leapfrogged Bobrovsky in the Conn Smythe odds. His 42 points are the most in a single postseason by any active player.

Oilers vs. Panthers predictions

As the series shifts back to Oil Country for Game 6, Edmonton sees themselves as the slight favorites – a distinction they have held in each game of this series at Rogers Place. The sportsbooks have weighed home ice advantage extremely heavily all postseason long. Florida opens as the underdogs as they continue to search for their first title in their franchise’s history.

An interesting statistic to note prior to Edmonton’s two consecutive wins in this series was their three stretches of wins following three-game losing streaks – they topped out with a ludicrous 16-game winning streak earlier this season under head coach Kris Knoblauch. They’ve begun to prove their resilience following losses, as they now possess the chance to force a Game 7 in Florida on Monday night.

They also rattled off three consecutive wins to eliminate the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final after finding themselves down 2-1 in the series. In addition to this, Stuart Skinner notably boasts a spotless 9-0 record in Games 4-7 during these playoffs. He sports a ridiculous 1.56 goals against average and a .939 save percentage along with one shutout. Despite receiving heavy criticism for his lack of consistency and poor performances this postseason, the Edmonton native has been lights out when it matters most. This stat should be weighed heavily.

Edmonton is a modest 7-4 at home in the playoffs, while Florida possesses a similar record at 7-3. This follows the trend of both teams boasting similar home/away splits.

After embarrassingly going 0-for-4 on moneylines to open this series, I correctly chose Edmonton as the winner for Game 5. I had simply expected the Oilers to perform at the standard they have the past two games throughout the entirety of this series, which they evidently did not. However, they’re now riding some serious momentum and McDavid is at the top of his game in search of his first Stanley Cup.

After two convincing performances, it would come as no surprise to see a Game 7 forced. It’s about to get wild in Oil Country.

Oilers vs. Panthers puck line analysis

After going 14 consecutive games without losing by more than one goal, the Panthers have done so in back-to-back outings. They began their impressive stretch in Game 2 of the second round against the Boston Bruins, before seeing it end with an ugly 8-1 drubbing in Game 4 of the Cup Final.

Once again, it’s extremely hard to imagine a scenario where Florida is blown out by a similar score as the outcome of Game 4. They trailed 4-3 nearing the end of Game 5 before McDavid trumped an incredible goal line stop form Matthew Tkachuk with an empty net goal. The Oilers covered the spread with the victory.

I noted how streaky yet powerful the Oilers’ offense can be. They opened Game 5 with three quick goals before allowing any, then eventually saw their lead fade to a single goal. McDavid had several beautiful plays, such as his astounding assist on Corey Perry’s tally. I’m absolutely certain he will find the scoresheet in a do-or-die Game 6, though this is far from a hot take.

Expect McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the rest of the Oilers’ stars to play big minutes, especially if they’re in need of some offense. If the Panthers finally close this series out, I don’t expect it to be a blowout and fully expect the Oilers to be well within reach for the entirety of the game.

Just like how the Panthers appeared to be the much better team for the first three games of this series, the Oilers have done just that in Games 4 and 5. Expect them to deliver a strong performance. I may stick with their moneyline, as their puck line is objectively riskier and the Panthers’ odds to cover the spread are extremely low and offers little value. Though if I had to choose, I’m riding with the Oilers.

Oilers vs. Panthers Over/Under analysis

After Games 1 and 2 hit the Under and were incredibly low-scoring, the past three games have all hit the Over. The Oilers have managed 13 goals in the past two games, and while Florida has only managed to score four, Edmonton’s offense has done more than enough to satisfy bettors of the Over.

I went 3-for-3 last game by selecting the correct moneyline, puck line, and Over/Under total. I, as many fans likely did as well, expected a dominant Oilers performance (or a dominant McDavid performance, more specifically). The league’s best player and offensive weapon seems unstoppable right now, and his team’s offense is rolling despite fellow superstar Draisaitl struggling to produce. Should #97 get him going, I have little doubt that this game will be the fourth in a row to hit the Over.

Given the trajectory and narrative of this series, it seems as though the Oilers’ offensive brass will once again carry the total goals in this game above five. It would be unwise to bet against McDavid, especially given his performance the past two games.

Ride the hot hand here.

Oilers vs. Panthers Player to Watch – Evan Bouchard

  • Oilers’ ML, Connor McDavid: 1+ Assist, Evan Bouchard: 1+ Point (+170 at bet365 sportsbook, +355 with 50% profit boost)
  • Evan Bouchard: 1+ Power Play Points (+120 at bet365 sportsbook)

While all eyes will unquestionably be on #97, Evan Bouchard has been a beneficiary of playing with McDavid and Draisaitl while being elite in his own right. The 24-year-old recorded three assists in the Oilers’ Game 5 win to bring his postseason total to 32. His 26 assists tie him with Paul Coffey for the most by a defenseman in a single playoff.

Additionally, two of his three assists came on the power play, marking his first points via the man advantage of the Cup Final. Bouchard has scored a ridiculous 115 points across the regular season and playoffs combined and is a fantastic higher-odds choice to include in your parlays as opposed to Draisaitl or Zach Hyman.

The past two games, I have parlayed Oilers’ moneyline, McDavid assist, and Bouchard point to great success. This parlay can be as high as over +350 odds with certain profit boosts included.
