  • Can Barkov go on a Selke Trophy winning streak?
  • Who are Barkov’s challengers in the Selke odds?
  • Which players are longshot picks that you shouldn’t sleep on?

The Frank J. Selke Trophy will likely one day be re-named “The Bergeron Trophy”, and if Patrice Bergeron isn’t the one it’s named after, don’t be surprised if Aleksander Barkov gets that honor. After a phenomenal season for the Florida Panthers, Barkov won his second career Frank J. Selke Trophy, with more to come in his future. According to our best NHL betting sites, Barkov was the odds-on favorite in the Selke odds for most of the season, and the voting really reflected his dominance.

The other two finalists for the Selke Trophy were Auston Matthews and Jordan Staal, while voters gave a lot of love to Sam Reinhart, as well as Anze Kopitar. Looking ahead to next season, Barkov is the clear-cut favorite in the Selke odds, though he’ll have some tough competition in his bid for a repeat.

Selke Odds Favorite

Aleksander Barkov (+500)

After one heck of a regular season, Barkov has led the Panthers to the Eastern Conference Finals, as his two-way presence on the ice is unmatched. After winning the Selke Trophy three seasons ago, Barkov rightfully won it again this year, amassing 165 first-place votes. Barkov’s name has been tied to the Selke award ever since he came into the league, as he’s now been a finalist three times.

He’s dominant in the faceoff circle, isn’t careless with the puck, and gives his team the opportunity to win every game. One quality voters look for is the offensive output, and Barkov certainly chips in, as he had 80 points in 73 games this past season. Which has carried into the playoffs, as he’s recorded fives goals and 13 points in 11 games.

Selke Odds Contender

Anze Kopitar (+750)

Kopitar is always a contender in the Selke odds, but has been for a much longer stretch. Since 2006, Kopitar has been a finalist for the Selke trophy four times, winning the award in 2016 and 2018. The captain for the Los Angeles Kings has long been heralded as one of, if not the best, two-way forwards in the NHL. And in all honesty, he should have been a finalist this year, he was undoubtedly snubbed.

Like Barkov, Kopitar plays in every facet of the game, while playing intelligent hockey in the offensive, defensive, and neutral zones. He plays major minutes for the Kings, has a slightly better Faceoff Percentage than Barkov, and takes less penalties. The one area that sets them apart is the offensive production, though Kopitar’s 70 points in 81 games is respectful, Barkov gets the edge in the Selke odds because he is able to contribute more in the offensive zone.

Selke Odds Longshot

Elias Pettersson (+1600)

There’s no doubt about it, Elias Pettersson wasn’t given a lot of respect in the Selke odds, and the voting was evidence of that. Pettersson finished 26th in votes, but to be clear, the voters got it wrong. He helped elevate the Vancouver Canucks out of the league basement and into a contending team. The Swedish forward gets a ton of flack for his play on the ice, but if you watch his game, he plays more of North American style of hockey than most North American hockey players.

Offensively speaking, Pettersson is probably the best two-way forward in the NHL today, as his elusiveness gives him the upper hand against other team’s top stars. Over the last few years, he’s really become a star on the penalty kill for the Canucks, as he’s scored seven short-handed goals and totaled 14 short-handed points in his career. He rarely takes penalties, had 10 Game Winning Goals this season, and is a tenacious forechecker.

Ready to take on the Selke Trophy odds?

The Selke odds will definitely be an interesting futures market to bet on, but a tough one. Voters are split between voting on a defensive forward who contributes in the offensive zone, while others lean towards the forwards whose defensive skills are a notch above the rest. Other names to keep an eye on are Jordan Staal, Roope Hintz, Auston Matthews, and Joel Eriksson Ek.
