April 1, 2026: The BC Government launches Gambling Support BC. The comprehensive responsible gambling platform, delivered in partnership with Telus Health, provides access to clinical counseling services, allowing users to connect with trained professionals 24/7. It also includes a self-assessment program and tailored education.

March 10, 2026: Great Canadian Entertainment has agreed to sell Elements Casino Surrey to the Semiahmoo First Nation, marking its eighth B.C. casino sale to an Indigenous group in the past two years. The deal includes the casino next to Fraser Downs racetrack, which remains open with 500 slot machines, and still requires financing, regulatory approvals, and sign off from the City of Surrey, which owns the property.

Feb. 19, 2026: Vancouver City Council narrowly voted 5-4 to let Parq Casino expand its slot machine capacity by 50%, allowing the venue to add up to 300 machines and raise its total from 600 to 900. The expansion, requested by Parq and BCLC after the city eased its long-standing moratorium on casino growth, will be the casino’s largest since moving to its current site in 2017.

Dec. 4, 2025: The BC government unveils an overhaul of gambling regulation aimed at strengthening oversight, combating money laundering, and modernizing rules for online and in-person gambling. Changes are expected to take effect in April 2026.

Sept. 21, 2025: BCLC continues its retail expansion with a fifth PROLINE sportsbook lounge at Chances Casino Fort St. John, the first in norther B.C.

May 21, 2025: The BCLC opens the latest PROLINE Sportsbook Lounge in Maple Ridge. It's the third sportsbook lounge to open in the province after Parq Casino in Vancouver and Chances Casino Kelowna.

April 28, 2025: The Liberal party wins the federal election with a minority government and Mark Carney named Prime Minister. It appears unlikely the results will affect BC sports betting.

April 23, 2025: A PWHL expansion team is announced in Vancouver, adding to the professional sports available in the province.

March 23, 2025: A Canadian federal election is called for April 28. It remains to be seen how this will affect BC sports betting.

February 18, 2025: BCLC Board Chair Greg Moore warned that legal sports betting in Alberta could negatively affect PlayNow.com and sports betting in British Columbia.  

February 9, 2025: The first in-person sports betting lounge opened at Chances Casino Kelowna to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday. Another opened at Parq Vancouver Casino the following day.

Unlike in Ontario and several American states, British Columbia does not have a licensing process for sportsbooks. This means, technically speaking, PlayNow.com is the only legal sportsbook in BC. However, because there is no regulated market, you can access offshore sites or Canadian sportsbooks with Kahnawake Gaming Commission licenses in British Columbia.  

These offshore and Kahnawake sportsbooks do not have retail sports betting locations in British Columbia. However, if you want to bet on sports in person, you can place wagers at Proline kiosks anywhere in British Columbia. There are also in-person sportsbook lounges at Chances Kelowna and Parq Vancouver casinos.

If you are over 19 years old and located within the province's borders, you can legally place British Columbia sports bets. Keep the following in mind before getting started:

🔞 Legal betting age — The minimum gambling age in British Columbia is 19 years old. If you are 19 or older, you can bet on sports legally in BC. This is pretty much the only restriction to sports betting in British Columbia.

🌎 Within provincial borders — You do not have to be a resident of BC. However, you must prove your identity at most British Columbia sportsbooks.

📱 Mobile and online betting — Typically, you will be required to upload a photo of your driver’s license or other government ID (passport, tribal ID, etc.) before you make a withdrawal. Some do this automatically using the personal information you provided in the sportsbook sign-up form.

🏢 Retail sportsbooks — Currently, British Columbia is not home to any land-based sportsbooks. Any in-person sports bets must be made at a BCLC retailer.
