  • Can Roy motivate the Islanders?
  • Why is Bednar a longshot pick in the Jack Adams Award odds?

The Jack Adams Award odds is a tricky futures market to pin down. Not because the lack of talented head coaches in the NHL, but because it’s difficult to understand how a voter weighs their decision. Coaches whose teams are expected to do well are rarely given their respect, though voters still are biased when it comes to the teams they cover. While it’s usually coaches who take teams that are believed to do poor, and lead them to the top of the NHL standings, that gain most of the attention.

According to our best NHL betting sites, Rick Tocchet was the odds-on favorite most of this year, as he took home the 2024 Jack Adams Award. After the Canucks finished with the 11th worst record in the NHL last season, he guided them to a tie for fifth-place this year. As the Toronto Maple Leafs were bounced early from the playoffs once again, they parted ways with head coach Sheldon Keefe, who was promptly hired by the New Jersey Devils as their new bench coach. With the plethora of talent on the Devils’ roster, Keefe opens as the favorite in the 2025 Jack Adams Awards odds.

Keep in mind, there are a few NHL head coach positions that need to be filled, so expect quite a bit of movement in the Jack Adams Award odds once teams hire their new coaches.

Jack Adams Award Odds Favorite

Sheldon Keefe (+130)

Keefe’s tenure as the Leafs’ head coach was a rocky one, though that’s mostly due to the fact the media spotlight in Toronto is humungous. Over the last five seasons, Keefe led Toronto to a 212-97-40 regular season record. But it was the lack of success in the playoffs that doomed Keefe’s employment. Only once did they make it past the first-round and that just wasn’t going to cut it. If it wasn’t for those pesky Game 7’s, Keefe would still be coaching the Leafs.

Now with the Devils, Keefe is expected to bring New Jersey back to the playoffs, and is the favorite in the Jack Adams Award odds. The Devils underperformed this year, which can be attributed to some unlucky injuries, but next year could be huge for the young team. After having the third best record in the NHL only two seasons ago, the Devils missed the playoffs altogether this year, which works out in Keefe’s favor. If New Jersey can stay healthy, don’t be surprised to see them climb to a top-10 spot in the standings next year, and Keefe will receive a lot of attention with a turnaround like that.

Jack Adams Award Odds Contender

Patrick Roy (+400)

Patrick Roy is no stranger to the Jack Adams Award, as he won it with the Colorado Avalanche in 2013. He took a team that had just drafted Nathan MacKinnon first overall and lifted them to a third place finish in league standings the following season. His time with Colorado was well-documented, from outbursts behind the bench, to publicly calling his players out when he felt they weren’t playing well, to his decision to step down as their head coach.

The Islanders shocked the hockey world when they fired head coach Lane Lambert in January, replacing him with the Hall of Fame goaltender. With Roy behind the bench, New York had a 20-12-5 record, while guiding them into the playoffs. Though they were ousted quickly by the Carolina Hurricanes, the Islanders showed they have the potential to take the next step. And Roy will play a major factor in their success. Which is why he’s the perfect contender in the Jack Adams Award odds.

Jack Adams Award Odds Longshot

Jared Bednar (+2500)

Since 2018, the Colorado Avalanche have the third-best record in the NHL, yet Jared Bednar has never won the Jack Adams Award. To be fair, Jon Cooper hasn’t won it either, and the Tampa Bay Lightning have the second-best record in that time span. But there’s a little difference between the two head coaches. The Lightning were considered contenders practically every year, while it took a while for the Avalanche to be taken seriously. In the 2017-2018 season, Colorado finished with one of the worst season in NHL history, but then made the playoffs the following year.

It was a 47-point increase, and though he was a finalist that season, he lost out to Vegas Golden Knights head coach Gerard Gallant. That was the only time Bednar has been a finalist for the Jack Adams Award, even though Colorado has finished as a top-3 team three times over the last five seasons (with a 5th and 6th place finish sprinkled in there), including winning the President’s Trophy. Bednar deserves more respect in the Jack Adams Award odds, which will be hard to gain, considering the Avalanche are perennial contenders in the Stanley Cup odds.

Ready to take on the Jack Adams odds?

If you’re looking to bet on this futures market, you’ll have to decide on two things. One, do you go for the new head coach of a team? And two, do you go for the team that perhaps missed the playoffs, but you believe will improve dramatically next season. Over the last five seasons, three head coaches won with teams that were expected to do well, and twice it was won by a coach to took their teams to new heights.
