The Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football was launched in 1961 by merging the NAFC and Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol. The merger saw a single championship competition take place instead of many competitions. In 1963, CONCACAF held its first competition in El Salvador. Costa Rica became the first nation to win the championship. The competition took place every two years from 1963 through to 1973.
In 1965, the second six-team CONCACAF tournament took place in Guatemala. In this case, Mexico was the winner. Big changes came in 1974 when CONCACAF became tied to the World Cup.
