Latest FIFA Men's Rankings: Best International Teams in the World
Men's soccer over the years can be shown by examining how various teams have done since FIFA began evaluating member associations. Only eight countries have occupied the top spot at any time in the ranking's history - Germany, Brazil, Italy, France, Argentina, Spain, the Netherlands, and Belgium. In 1993, Germany became the first member association to take the top spot. During its World Cup bid in 1994, Brazil took its spot as the rank leader. In the thirty years since the ranking's inception, the South American squad has had the most success.
Brazil has held the top spot 12 times, with the longest streak lasting almost seven years. Another prosperous member organization is Spain, which has six times held the top spot. France was No.1 after 16 years when FIFA updated the ranking system. For the first time, the Blues shared the top rank with another team, Belgium. The most recent team rankings place Brazil at the top.
