Spain v Germany Preview, Team News And Prediction

The Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor plays host to the match many identified as the most mouth-watering of the Group Stage at the 2022 World Cup. The results from the first round of games have only intensified this feeling as Germany are essentially playing knockout football already. Can Spain take advantage of the pressure upon their opponents?

Spain - Form and Team News

Spain topped their group at the Nations League earlier this year, and their results there tell us far more about their form than their friendlies against Albania, Iceland and Jordan. A home loss to Switzerland was something of a surprise but taking four points from neighbours Portugal will have been welcome. Their opening World Cup game against Costa Rica always looked likely to be a mismatch, but Spain swept them aside 7-0 without even conceding a shot, much less a goal. No matter the respective standing of the two teams, it was a very impressive performance. The pleasing thing for Luis Enrique is that seven of his players have a goal and/or assist in Qatar already. The starting front three of Marco Asensio, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres are all off the mark and will feel confident ahead of this match.

Germany - Form and Team News

Germany have not been displaying the form of potential world champions this year. While they have only lost twice, there have been four 1-1 draws and a 3-3 at Wembley in which they led 2-0 with 19 minutes to go. The defeat to Hungary in the Nations League was unexpected but that was nothing compared to the 2-1 loss to Japan in their first match at the 2022 World Cup. It is important that Hansi Flick and his team do not overreact to the loss though. Germany missed three clear-cut chances while they were 1-0 up and another after Japan had equalised. Serge Gnabry was the biggest culprit with two of the failures, but finishing was slack across the whole team. On another day they win that game easily. The result has brought pressure though. Assuming Japan beat Costa Rica earlier in the day, anything less than a win here and Germany will be out.

World Cup 2022 - Match 28 Analysis

The head-to-head record between these teams could barely be more even, with nine wins for Germany, eight for Spain and eight draws. However, their most recent meeting (in November 2020) saw the Spanish run riot in a 6-0 win, with Torres scoring a hat-trick. They’ve also lost none of the last three clashes and only one of the previous seven.

Luis Enrique has a well-established 4-3-3 formation for his side, and while Germany used that system in some of their qualification matches, Hansi Flick has favoured 4-2-3-1 more recently. It’s a very solid formation and allows the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Joshua Kimmich to work well in both directions behind the four attackers. It’s worth noting Switzerland used those tactics when inflicting the only defeat the Spanish have suffered this year too.

One Player To Watch: Ferran Torres

Neither of these sides had a player among the top scorers in qualifying, nor the recent Nations League. Having a variety of players who can deliver is good for teams but bad news for bettors. In Spain’s last friendly they beat Jordan 3-1. Only one player scored in that and their

hammering of Costa Rica: Gavi. But he is not a consistent enough scorer to rely on here. Instead, we’ll look to Ferran Torres, who scored twice against the Central Americans. The 22-year-old has netted six times in his last 10 appearances, bagged a hat-trick the last time he faced Germany, and is on penalties which is always worth taking into account. The Barcelona forward is available at 7.5* to open the scoring and 3.3* to get a goal at any point.

Spain vs. Germany Prediction and Tips

Considerations for you before placing your bet:

  • Spain have the better of the recent head-to-head record and won 6-0 the last time these teams met.
  • Germany have drawn a lot of matches in 2022, winning just twice in their last nine games.
  • Their only clean sheet in those fixtures occurred against Oman.
  • The likelihood is that Germany will be out if they don’t win.
  • Both teams have averaged a total of at least three goals per game across their last six matches.
  • Ferran Torres is in strong form after a brace against Costa Rica.

Bet selections:

  • Spain to win (2.40*)
  • Both teams to score: Yes (1.58*)
  • Over 3.5 goals (2.75*)
  • Ferran Torres to score any time (3.3*)
