Liverpool FC Fixtures and All You Need To Know About the Club

The English Premier League has some of the most popular and beloved football teams on the planet, with one of the most prominent clubs being Liverpool FC. It is a top-tier team in England with world-class footballers and has won multiple titles, for instance, the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup. Throughout this read, you will learn about the club's origin and where to find  Liverpool fixtures and results. So, ensure you read this piece in its entirety for more information.

Brief History of Liverpool F.C

Liverpool F.C. was founded in March 1892 after a dispute between John Houlding and the committee of Everton. Since John Houlding was the landowner at Anfield, the disagreement forced Everton to move to Goodison Park, and John Houlding used the opportunity to create Liverpool Football Club. Three months after its initialisation, it enrolled in the Football Association.

They played their first club match in September 1892, beating Rotherham Town 7-1. In their first season, they won the Lancashire League, which saw them enter the Football League Second Division for 1893/1894.

1896 saw Liverpool promoted to the First Division, and in 1901 they won their first league title. The club reached the FA Cup final for the first time in 1914, which they lost to Burnley. After many non-trophy years, they went on to win the League during the 1921/1922 season and the 1922/1923 season. After that, they experienced a significant decline with relegation to the Second Division. This led to the appointment of Bill Shankly, who reshaped the team, brought it back to the First Division, and won the league in 1964. The win marked the start of the Liverpool era.

Club Profile

During the formation of Liverpool FC, the club wore modern-day Everton colours, which comprised blue and white. In 1894, the home kit was changed to red shirts and white shorts until 1964, when the manager Bill Shankly created the all-red colours. According to Ronnie Yeats, Shankly entered the changing room and threw him a pair of red shorts to try on. The all-red colour looked intimidating, so they reddened their socks, giving life to the club's current kit.

On the other hand, the crest was introduced in 1901, but it was not incorporated into the team jerseys until 1955. The badge symbolises the City of Liverpool's famous liver bird. Many changes have been made to the badge over the years, including introducing a red liver bird standing on a football, which was on the crest given to the team as the heraldic badge. However, despite numerous changes, the crest was changed back to the initial 1970s badge, but they retained the gates and the twin flame symbols. This is the crest used by Liverpool FC to date.

Liverpool F.C. also has a motto:' You'll Never Walk Alone.' It is included on the current crest right below the Shankly gates. Other crucial details you need to know about this football club include:

Anfield - The Home of Liverpool FC

Anfield has been home to Liverpool FC since the club was formed. The grounds initially belonged to Everton until they parted ways with John Houlding, Liverpool's founder, due to a dispute. Anfield, named after its surrounding region, was developed in 1884. However, the field underwent numerous changes until 2016. The pitch's measurements are 101 by 68 metres, and the stadium has a capacity of 53,394. It features 64 executive suites, and a police room, not to mention a landing and refreshment area. In February 1952, Anfield achieved its record capacity, which is 61,905. This was during a game between them and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Unlike other famous football clubs in England, they have never used any other ground but Anfield.

Are you also known as - The Reds? Why?

Liverpool F.C. is popularly known as The Reds. However, there is no mystery about the nickname's origin other than that it is adopted from the team's kit colours. Being the only team that wears full red home jerseys, including red socks, it made sense to refer to the club as 'The Reds.'

Owners, Мarket Value and Brand

Fenway Sports Group Holdings, LLC owns the English club—a company managed by Tom Werner and John Henry, the club's principal owner and chairman. Liverpool's board of directors also comprises Mike Gordon, B. Hogan, the Chief Executive Officer, and A. Hughes, the managing director. The club has a brand value of $1.4 billion, making it one of the top 10 wealthiest clubs globally.

The Trophy Cabinet

Liverpool FC has been winning different competitions since its inception in 1892. You should, therefore, expect the trophy cabinet to be filled with other trophies. Below are some of the 49 significant men's first-team honours in Liverpool's trophy cabinet.

Domestic Trophies - English Premier League and FA Cup

On the home front, Liverpool FC has won 19 Top League titles; however, only one is the Premier League, with the others being the old First Division titles. As for the iconic FA Cup, they have won it seven times; other domestic trophies include:

  • Second Division titles x4
  • League Cups x9
  • FA Charity/Community Shield x15

European and World Trophies - UEFA Champions League

Liverpool FC was dominant in Europe in the late seventies and early eighties when they were crowned the UEFA European Champions four times. Since then, they have added two UEFA Champions League titles - 2005 (the Miracle of Istanbul) and 2019. Other UEFA trophies on their honours list include:

  • UEFA Super Cup x4
  • UEFA Cup x3

Also, they have one FIFA Club World Cup they won in 2019.

What About The Fans?

Liverpool FC has an extensive fan base spanning over 50 countries worldwide. The team has over 200 recognised supporter clubs, with Spirit of Shankly among the most notable official ones. More often, team fans are referred to as Kopites, and in 2008, they formed A.F.C Liverpool, a splinter group that plays matches for fans who cannot watch the Premier League.

Legends of the Kop

Since its creation in 1892, The Football Club has been lucky to produce and accommodate many world-class players. They have shown superb dribbling, vision and impeccable goal-scoring capabilities. Here are five Liverpool club legends.

Kenny Dalglish

Also known as King Kenny, Kenny Dalglish is one of the most prolific players ever to wear Liverpool's jersey. For the 502 matches Dalglish played, he scored 169 goals, including the iconic goal in 1978 that saw Liverpool win the European Champions Cup. He is also one of the most compassionate due to his amazing acts after the Hillsborough tragedy.

John Barnes

John Barnes is one of the top attackers in football history and an icon to Liverpool fans. Barnes was not just good at scoring but also great at dribbling, and this earned him the Football Writers Players of the Year accolade in 1990.

Ian Rush

For years, Ian Rush successfully terrorised other teams' defences. Being paired with Kenny Dalglish was a bright decision as the two complemented each other on the field. Rush scored 207 goals in around 350 games during his two stints with the club, making him one of the most notable players.

Ray Kennedy

It is impossible not to think of Ray Kennedy when listing the best Liverpool players. After showing impressive footwork skills in Arsenal, Bill Shankly purchased Ray for £250,000. This was an incredible move as Ray went ahead to help them clinch multiple titles. He was also one of the critical members of the Liverpool squad that reigned in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Steven Gerrard

Despite scoring only 186 goals in his 710 appearances, Steven Gerrard was a master at work in the team's midfield. His career at Liverpool earned him numerous accolades and introduced him to the world as one of the best central midfielders. He is also one of the most notable captains in the club's history who kept his teammates motivated throughout the games.

Top 5 Goalscorers

Over the years, the club has had some fantastic strikers, including homegrown talents such as Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler. Also, The Kop has seen the attacking prowess of Ian St. John, Kevin Keegan, Fernando Torres and Luis Suárez, to name a few. Also, the current batch of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and ‎Luis Diaz are not bad either. Below are the top 5 goal scorers in the history of this great Football Club.

  1. Ian Rush - 346
  2. Roger Hunt - 285
  3. Gordon Hodgson - 241
  4. Billy Liddell - 228
  5. Steven Gerrard - 186

The Greatest Liverpool Managers - Top 3

Clubs depend on both players and managers to win matches. The relationship is symbiotic; managers develop gaming plans, whereas players execute them. Throughout Liverpool's history, they have had great managers shaping the team and bringing the best out of the players - the latest being Jurgen Klopp. We will now shine the light on what we believe are their top 3 managers:

Bob Paisley

Bob Paisley was Liverpool's manager from 1974 to 1983. Despite having a short football career due to World War II, Bob Paisley won various titles, including three League Cups and Six League titles. Furthermore, he helped Liverpool FC win its first three UEFA European Cups. He is the only manager ever to win the old European Cups three times (old UEFA Champions League Format). Since 1992, when the current UEFA Champions League format came into existence, only two other managers have followed in his footsteps and won the trophy three times - Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane.

Kenny Dalglish

Dalglish is one of the most notable managers ever to lead Liverpool. Being a former player, Daglish knew Liverpool's structure, enabling him to lead the team successfully from 1985 to 1991. The only thing that came between Dalglish and a successful career in the European leagues was the Heysel disaster that saw the team banned from all European leagues. Else, he would have ended up clinching multiple titles.

Bill Shankly

It is impossible to put up a list of top Liverpool managers without including Bill Shankly. Shankly won multiple First Division leagues and many FA Charity shields. His arrival at the club in 1959 saw Liverpool improve significantly. This explains the presence of his statue at Anfield Stadium and the addition of Shankly gates on Liverpool's crest.

Record Transfers - Buys and Sales

Since 1892, many players have landed and left Liverpool. This is usually a norm in the English Premier League since clubs always seek to strengthen their squad with the best players. Below is a list of record transfers that will ever happen at Liverpool.

Arrivals - Most Expensive Transfers In

Here is a list of the most expensive arrivals into the football club and their transfer fees:

  1. Virgil van Dijk, £76.19m, 2018, Southampton
  2. Alisson, £56.25m, 2018, SA Roma
  3. Naby Keita, £54.00m, 2018, RB Leipzig
  4. Christian Benteke, £41.85m, 2015, Aston Villa
  5. Fabinho, £40.50m, 2018, Monaco

Departures - Highest Transfers Out

Below is a quick analysis of some of the most expensive departures at the club.

  1. Philippe Coutinho, £121.50m, 2018, Barcelona
  2. Luis Suérez, £73.55m, 2014, Barcelona
  3. Raheem Sterling, £57.33m, 2015, Manchester City
  4. Fernando Torres, £52.65m, 2011, Chelsea
  5. Xabi Alonso, £31.05m, 2009, Real Madrid

Derbies and Rivalries

Liverpool's longest-standing rivalry is with Everton. The Merseyside derby has seen many sending-offs (red cards) of players due to competitiveness between the two teams. Even though the number of Liverpool supporters always outweighs those of Everton, both fan clubs play a crucial role in ensuring the success of their club.

Another memorable rivalry includes that of Liverpool and Manchester United. This is one of the biggest rivalries that started during the city's industrial revolution in the 19th century. It is usually referred to as the most popular fixture in football. From 1964 to 1967, the rivalry became even more popular when Liverpool and Manchester United traded titles.

Most Memorable Liverpool Matches

If you follow the team's history, you will discover that the club has had some memorable matches. A good example is The Miracle of Istanbul. This was a UEFA Champions League Final between The Reds and AC Milan (who were the favourites). Liverpool staged a 2nd-half comeback from being three down at halftime to tie the game 3 to 3 after extra time. In the resulting penalty shootout, Shevchenko missed, leading to Liverpool winning 3-2 and lifting The European Champion Clubs' Cup, AKA the UEFA Champions League trophy.

Biggest Wins

The Football Club has enjoyed some big wins, such as in 1969 in the Fairs Cup when they thrashed Dundalk FC 10-0.

They repeated the same feat in the 1968 League Cup, beating Fulham FC 10-0. Even though this game only had 13,498 spectators, it was one of the most memorable games for the Reds players.

The club's most significant European win came in 1974 when they beat Strømsgodset IF 11-0 at Anfield.

Heaviest Defeats

Even though they undoubtedly had great teams and players, there are multiple instances when opponents have humiliated them. For example, in the 1963 game against Tottenham Hotspur,  Spurs ran out 7-2 winners.

2015, they suffered another humbling defeat while playing Stoke City in an English Premier League match. Stoke City thrashed them 6-1 with 27,602 spectators watching.

Even as recent as October 2020, Aston Villa beat them 7-2 in a Premier League match.
