Super Bowl MVP strategy

What’s important to remember here is that the quarterback is almost always the position to win this award. Not only that, but almost every Super Bowl MVP comes from the winning team. Focusing on skill positions (mainly quarterback) is a great place to start, alongside the team you believe will win the Super Bowl.

If you want a dark horse, wide receiver is the second-highest position to win the award. This year is a special case, where the tight ends could potentially be the focal point of each offense. As a result, it’s smart to look at George Kittle prop bets and Travis Kelce prop bets. And if you’re looking for an extreme long shot – Nick Bosa is and always has been a gamebreaker for the 49ers.

Super Bowl MVP: How is the award decided?

The Super Bowl MVP is awarded annually, usually to a player from the winning team who had the best statistical and/or most impactful on-field performance.

In the past, the media who covered the Super Bowl onsite determined the MVP winner through a vote that transpired late in the game. Now, though, 16 media members selected by the NFL cast a ballot, the results of which account for 80% of the overall vote.

The other 20% is determined by an online fan poll.

After all ballots are tallied by NFL personnel, the Super Bowl MVP trophy — which is named after former league commissioner Pete Rozelle — goes to the player who receives the most votes.

Who are the Super Bowl MVP favorites?

The current Super Bowl MVP favorites are Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

Mahomes, who is one of six quarterbacks in history to win the Super Bowl MVP multiple times, is listed at +135 at both BetMGM and Caesars, and +125 at DraftKings.

Among three prominent U.S. sportsbooks, Purdy’s best Super Bowl MVP price is at DraftKings (+225), followed by BetMGM (+230) and FanDuel (+200).

The third choice on the Super Bowl MVP odds board — multifaceted San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey — is priced at +450 at BetMGM, +475 at DraftKings, and +440 at FanDuel.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is fourth in odds to win Super Bowl MVP. His +1700 odds at FanDuel are significantly better than the +1200 price offered at Caesars and DraftKings.

Where can I bet on the Super Bowl MVP?

Super Bowl MVP odds are posted at the best sportsbooks in states and jurisdictions that have legalized sports betting.

However, some states that have passed sports betting legislation do not permit wagering on certain non-competitive events, and don’t give Super Bowl coin toss odds, Super Bowl National Anthem odds, Super Bowl halftime show odds, and Gatorade color odds as a result.

This year, Super Bowl MVP betting is allowed everywhere that sports betting is legal.

What are the Super Bowl MVP odds this year?

The Super Bowl MVP odds for this year’s game in Las Vegas were released before the 2023-24 playoffs kicked off.

Heading into Super Bowl 58, MVP odds at DraftKings Sportsbook range from a low of +140 for the favorite — that being Kansas Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes — to +10000 (or 10,000-to-1) for Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend and San Francisco punter Mitch Wishnowsky.

After Mahomes, only two players have Super Bowl MVP odds shorter than +1200 at DraftKings: 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (+225) and his backfield mate, running back Christian McCaffrey (+475).

In all, only 10 players — six from San Francisco, four from Kansas City — have Super Bowl MVP odds at DraftKings shorter than 100-to-1. That list:

49ers: Purdy; McCaffrey; wide receivers Deebo Samuel (+2000) and Brandon Aiyuk (+6000); tight end George Kittle (+6000); and defensive end Nick Bosa (+7500).

Chiefs: Mahomes; tight end Travis Kelce (+1200); running back Isiah Pacheco (+3000); and wide receiver Rashee Rice (+5000).

Super Bowl MVP odds history

Patrick Mahomes won the most recent Super Bowl MVP trophy after leading Kansas City to a 38-35 come-from-behind victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mahomes closed as the MVP favorite ahead of Super Bowl 57 with +130 odds. He also was the favorite going into Super Bowl 54 against the San Francisco 49ers, and he won it at +105 odds.

Going back to Super Bowl 44, only five players with odds greater than +300 have taken home the Super Bowl MVP trophy:

Team Player Odds
Seattle Seahawks (SB48) Malcom Smith +2000 (Field option)
Denver Broncos (SB50) Von Miller +2500
Philadelphia Eagles (SB52) Nick Foles +460
New England Patriots (SB53) Julian Edelman +2500
Los Angeles Rams (SB56) Cooper Kupp +600

Miller and Edelman are believed to be the biggest underdogs to win the award.

Let’s take a look at the previous five winners of the Super Bowl MVP:

Team Player Odds
Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes +130
Los Angeles Rams Cooper Kupp +600
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tom Brady +187
Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes +110
New England Patriots Julian Edelman +2000

What position has won the most Super Bowl MVPs?

Quarterbacks have won more than 56% of the Super Bowl MVP trophies, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes last year becoming the 32nd passer to capture the honor.

Mahomes also is the sixth player in history to win the award more than once. (The other five with multiple Super Bowl MVPs — Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Bart Starr, Terry Bradshaw, and Eli Manning — also were quarterbacks.)

The position with the second-most Super Bowl MVPs: wide receiver. Eight pass catchers have snagged the honor, the most recent being the Rams’ Kupp in Super Bowl 56.

Seven running backs have won the Super Bowl MVP, but none since Denver’s Terrell Davis in Super Bowl 32 back in January 1998.

Additionally, 10 defensive players — four linebackers, two defensive ends, two safeties, one cornerback, and one defensive tackle — have been named Super Bowl MVP.

Only one special teams player — Green Bay kick returner Desmond Howard in Super Bowl 31 — has taken home the trophy.
