Tournament structure and championship format
As a quadrennial tournament, the Copa América takes place every four years. Usually, it features 12 participating countries, including all 10 teams from CONMEBOL in South America and two from other confederations. However, the 2024 edition will have 16 teams: 10 from CONMEBOL and 6 from CONCACAF:
CONMEBOL Teams | CONCACAF Teams |
Argentina | Jamaica |
Bolivia | Mexico |
Brazil | Panama |
Chile | United States |
Columbia | Canada |
Ecuador | Costa Rica |
Paraguay | |
Peru | |
Uruguay | |
Venezuela |
Since CONMEBOL is the governing body, all 10 teams from the confederation are automatically eligible for the Copa América. Meanwhile, CONCACAF countries qualify via the Nations League. All qualified teams are divided into four groups (A to D), and the two nations after the group stage qualify for the knockouts.
Copa América doesn’t schedule round-of-16 matches due to the small number of participants. So, the knockouts begin with the quarter finals. From then until the final, the competition follows the standard football format of the winner of each game advancing to the next. Notably, however, only the final has extra time. Other knockout matches go straight to penalties if it’s a tie after 90 minutes.

Top 3 contenders to win Copa América 2024 - Oddspedia’s picks
As mentioned, the top contenders to win Copa América 2024 are Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. These are undoubtedly the best teams in South America with superb players like Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr, and Luis Suarez. So it’s easy to understand why they’re favorites.
Away from name and history, current form and odds also highlight Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay as top contenders. So, when making your Copa América 2024 picks, you can consider wagering on these teams for a higher probability of winning. We’ll discuss their chances in more detail in the subsequent sections.
Argentina at the Copa América 2024 - Fixtures, squad strength & odds to win
In the past year, Argentina lost only one game — against Uruguay in November 2023. All other fixtures involving the countries were straight wins, and it’s worth highlighting that Argentina beat Brazil during the period. Hence, the team is going into the Copa América tournament in incredible form.
Argentina has the lowest outright winning odds, ranging from +173 to +175 at the best US sportsbooks. The team is expected to retain the title, banking on the prowess of Lionel Messi, the current world’s best player, and other stars like Angel Di Maria, Julian Alvarez, and Paulo Dybala. Their first fixture is against Canada in the opening match. After that, La Albiceleste will play Chile before ending the group stage against Peru.
Brazil at the Copa América 2024 - Fixtures, squad strength & odds to win
The last Copa América competition was held in Brazil, with the final at the Maracana Stadium. Unfortunately, the host country lost 1-0 to Lionel Messi and Argentina. In 2024, the team has what it takes to lift the trophy. Brazil arguably has the strongest squad, featuring stars like Neymar Jr, Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Richarlison, and Gabriel Jesus.
Insights from renowned betting sites show Brazil's winning odds range from +221 to +225. That places them as second favorites after Argentina. The country will first play Costa Rica, then Paraguay, and finally Columbia in Group D.
Uruguay at the Copa América 2024 - Fixtures, squad strength & odds to win
Ranked third on the top-contender list, Uruguay’s average odds is +500. It has a far lower probability than Argentina and Brazil, but there’s no ruling out that the team can lift the trophy. For emphasis, they’re the only side to have won Argentina in the past year.
Uruguay will be looking up to the veteran Luis Suarez to lead them to glory as captain. However, the squad also boasts younger legs like Darwin Núñez and Federico Valverde.
